This mini project was part of a class led by Jacqueline Bates from the New York Times Opinion. We were challenged to immerse ourselves in the local community, identify a story, conduct interviews, and pitch our findings—all within a 12-hour timeframe. The story below has been dramatized for effect.
The story explores how Bowen Island, home to some of the highest median incomes in Canada, managed to build a multimillion-dollar medical center while the rest of the province struggles with a healthcare crisis. The majority of the funds for this initiative were raised at the local golf course, underscoring a stark wealth disparity.
The piece juxtaposes the island's economic divide, where money flows from a golf course, with the dire situation in poorer communities across the province still fighting to access basic healthcare.
